Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)

Glucose after an 8-hour fast — the first step to find diabetes and prediabetes.

Fasting blood sugar measures blood glucose after at least 8 hours without food. 70–99 is normal, 100–125 is prediabetes, and 126 or more on two occasions points to diabetes.

If you are very thirsty, pass urine often, have a family history or extra weight, test at least once a year. The final diagnosis is made by your doctor, together with tests such as HbA1c.

Preparation before the test

  • Fast at least 8 hours (water only).
  • Do not take your morning diabetes medicine before the sample unless your doctor says otherwise.

This information is for awareness only and is not a substitute for medical advice — your treating doctor interprets the result for your case.
